Strengths Approach

We live in a world that fixates on the negative. We’re constantly asking “what’s wrong with me?” As a supervisor, we have so many responsibilities it’s easy to get caught up in how we’re failing. We’re conditioned to think we’re supposed to be “well-rounded” leaders who and excel at everything. We want our teams to be productive, positive, and innovative. When they’re not, we wonder what we’re doing wrong. We quickly forget about the things we do well. Strengths University uses a Strengths-based approach. We help you look at what’s right with you and how you can use your natural talents to solve problems, become more productive, and build stronger teams.
 
We often don’t even realize what our strengths are because they come so easily to us. Have you ever had someone say, “I could never do what you do,” but brushed off the comment because what you did was so effortless? Have people encouraged you to apply for new positions or promotions, but you're not sure why? Maybe you even feel like an impostor. What you may not realize is that things that seem easy to you are just that – easy for you but not everyone else. We live our lives without a narrator, so when other people notice how amazing we are we don’t always know what they see. We take ourselves and our abilities for granted. It’s not until we take the time to discover and understand our talents, that we start to see what other people do. Coaching and training through Strengths University can help you harness your own talents and abilities to achieve more, be more, become your best self, and develop your unique leadership style to become a more effective supervisor.

StrengthsFinder 2.0/CliftonStrengthsWe start with the CliftonStrengths (formerly StrengthsFinder 2.0) talent assessment by Gallup to identify your dominant talent themes. Strengths University provides individual coaching and group training that will help you and your team explore your talents and how they show up in your life – both positively and negatively. We’ll talk about how those talents look to you and the people around you. We’ll teach you how to invest in those talents so they become Strengths and use those talents to solve problems and achieve goals.

Strengths Coaching & Training

Once you’ve gotten a basic understanding of the Strengths framework and your personal talent sequence, coaching and training can take many directions. We’ve developed several options for supervisors to help you hone your leadership and management skills. We use coaching to help individual supervisors better understand your talents and how to maximize your team. We talk about what it means to lead with within the Strengths framework, including how to increase engagement and collaboration. We have group training to help groups of supervisors learn the basics of the Strengths framework and how to start a Strengths-based initiative with your team. We also provide group training for teams so they understand their own talents, how they can develop their talents into Strengths, and how to use that information to improve their work with the team. Strengths University will help you develop a vocabulary that will give you and your team the tools to better communicate what you’re good at, what you want, what you need, and how to navigate those things with supervisors, teammates, and other people in your organization.

Even though I’ve been working in the field of higher education for over 20 years, there’s still so much to learn. Strengths coaching has played a major role in my recent growth, both personally and professionally. I have a better idea of what I have to offer my students and coworkers, as well as the times when my Strengths could get in the way of where I want to go. I am thankful that my campus invested its resources into helping our students, staff, and faculty find this common language for understanding one another.
